What a ceramic coating costs, and when it actually pays off
Most of a coating quote is not the coating. Understanding that is the difference between a good buy and an expensive disappointment.

You are mostly paying for the preparation
A bottle of professional coating costs a fraction of what the job costs. Almost everything you are paying for is the work underneath: decontamination, then machine correction, then a panel wipe-down that strips every trace of polishing oil so the coating has bare paint to bond to.
That is why two coating quotes can differ by a thousand dollars while naming the same product. One includes a multi-stage correction and one includes a wash.
A coating locks in whatever is underneath
This is the single most important thing to understand before spending the money. A coating is optically clear and semi-permanent. It does not hide swirl marks, it preserves them, in some cases for years.
Paying to seal defects under a hard layer is the most common way people waste money on a coating. If a quote seems unusually cheap, the question to ask is not which product it uses. It is how many hours of correction are included.
If the honest answer for your car is a single-stage correction rather than a full multi-stage, a good detailer will tell you and quote the cheaper option.
What you get for the money in this climate
Nine months of rain a year is not really the problem. What the rain carries is: road film off I-5, brake dust, fir sap, and the mineral spotting that follows every dry-out.
Coated paint stays hydrophobic, so that film sheets off instead of bonding. In practice this shows up as a maintenance wash that takes half the time, less chance of etching while you are away for two weeks, and a gloss level that holds instead of fading between details.
When a coating is not worth it
There are cars we talk people out of coating.
- A lease you are handing back in under a year. Sealant is the sensible spend.
- Paint that has already been corrected several times and is running thin. Measure first.
- A car with no covered space anywhere near it. Coatings need protected dry cure time and there is no way around that in a Northwest autumn.
- A vehicle you are about to sell. Pre-sale detailing puts the money where a buyer will actually see it.
The honest arithmetic
Compare a coating against what you would otherwise spend. If you are already paying for a full detail two or three times a year to fight road film, a coating plus a short maintenance interval often costs less over two years and looks better the whole time.
If you detail once a year and park under cover, the case is much weaker. That is a real answer and we would rather give it than sell you a coating you did not need.
